HEDD releases free Lineariser plug-in - addresses monitor phase and harnesses host CPU power for phase-aligned audio

HEDD | Heinz Electrodynamic Designs

German studio monitor makers HEDD, founded by industry veteran Klaus Heinz and his son, musicologist Dr. Frederik Knop, have unveiled a free plug-in designed to solve one of the most challenging issues in loudspeaker design: Phase Linearisation.

While other manufacturers use DSP solutions within their speaker designs for correcting frequency responses (and rarely phase issues), the so-called Lineariser hands these tasks off to software, harnessing the power of the host computer CPU (up to 192 kHz, 32-bit), so that no additional AD/DA conversion in the speaker is necessary. The correction process increases the speakers stereo imaging qualities, their general accuracy and punch.

The HEDD Lineariser sits at the end of the stereo bus plug-in chain within the Digital Audio Workstation. It can also be used in standalone mode for use with media players such as iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, Groove, etc. Users can choose between three phase settings (Linear Full Range, Linear above 500 Hz, Minimum Phase) and two frequency-related curves (HEDD Alignment, Anechoic flat).

System Requirements: Windows (7, 8, 8.1, 10, x86, x64) – Mac OS X 10.8 or newer. The Lineariser is available in VST, AU, and AAX format.

I'm having problems understanding what this plugins actually does, in detail. It just says "Phase Linearisation", and the manual doesn't seem to help further.

Phase is never ever "linear", unless the sound is pretty much identical in both channels, meaning sounding in mono. But this plugin doesn't shrink the stereo image at all.
Does it perhaps dynamically adjust the azimuth of waveforms of the same pitch in both channels? Or a dynamic DC offset adjuster for both channels individually? I can't make it out ...

Or, is this plugin thought to work in combination with the manufacturer's speaker line, perhaps?
I do hear the difference when I use it, and the difference is sometimes an improvement and sometimes a worsening. Most of all it seems to increase the treble.

This plugin is no about the stereo phase. It works even with only one monitor. IMHO, every speaker in the monitor has its own phase response which is the sum of phase changes introduced by the splitting filter and the speaker itself (and maybe sound diffraction). So the sound in the far field could have dips and spikes in spectrum because the phase rotates differently at each frequency. It seems that the plugin solves this problem by phase correcting but only with HEDD monitors.

p.s. I apologies, English is not my native language.

Maybe I am over-skeptical, but how can this work without first taking up the phase response of the actual monitors being used?

As enessar says, maybe it only works with HEDD monitors.
