Some of the best free plugins you can ever get in an actual usable package. I had been using the Airwindows plugins for sometime ahead of this release and they were incredibly difficult to manage or figure out. The little descriptions make it so much more fun to discover. The tape emulation is also the best on the market, and it's all free.

This is a consolidated interface for all of the Airwindows plugins. That is the good part.

Unfortunately the plugins feel and sound like physics experiments. there is not clear direction what each one does, and there are multiple plugins that do the same thing in a slightly different way, most of them are really gentle to the sound, so you don't get a vibe of what they are doing, there are explanatory videos on the official airwindows you tube channel, which will only confuse you even more. plus they are demoed on some really bad recording/production of a rock piece. it's basically the author probably doodling around with recording some default guitar tone. You can see there is passion behind the plugins, looking at the face of the author showcasing them, but they really sound like a software engineer playing around with different audio processing ideas on his free time.

It's difficult to review this concisely since Chris from Airwindows has made so much stuff, but you're basically getting 50+ premium-level plugins for free in the form of a single multi-effect (though I would recommend signing up to his Patreon if you want to show support). The non-consolidated plugins were originally GUI-less, but this one looks very clean and is a bit easier on the eyes if you use a DAW like Reaper.

I didn't love every effect, but I think these ones deserve special mention:

  • The 'Cans' headphone cross-feed algorithms in Monitoring3.
  • The tape emulation in IronOxide5.
  • His reverb and ambience/ER algorithms.
  • The console emulation in Channel9, TubeDesk and TransDesk.
  • His saturation and distortion algorithms e.g. Spiral2.

This is available for Linux as well, so the page should be updated to reflect this.

Hi, I'm Chris from Airwindows. Love to see this but I didn't make this page. Maybe be kind to whoever did, and remember that it might run behind the real one? Yes, it is available for Linux. It's also been updated constantly over the last week, and is about to get a new plugin, Discontinuity, added this week. And most likely every week thereafter. Either someone has to update this page as often as I add new functionality to this plugin, or learn to accept that the KVR listing doesn't accurately reflect what the plugin is. 'cos I didn't create this page, so somebody else put this here, who maybe didn't understand what a commitment it would be to keep it current...
