BPB Saturator is a freeware saturation effect that is lightweight and easy to operate. It utilizes waveshaping to simulate tube and tape saturation. The plugin can work as a subtle saturation tool or a tube-based distortion effect.
The tube and tape saturation modules can be used separately. It is also possible to apply both types of saturation at the same time for a cumulative effect.
Keep the tube and tape models below 15 for a subtle saturation effect. Use higher values for audible distortion and a subtle volume boost.
The plugin also features a pair of transparent filters (high-pass and low pass) for removing any unwanted frequencies. The filters are also useful for simulating the frequency range of analog gear.
BPB Saturator is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac. Both 32-bit and 64-bit plugin hosts are supported.

This is one of the top saturators out there for my purposes. I prefer its tape saturation to the many other commercial tape plugins I own (Slate, Softube, ToneBoosters, U-he etc.). The tube portion can be very effective to increase the "bite" of a track. The controls are laid out nicely and you can dial in a sound quickly. You can go from subtle to over-the-top with both tape and tube. I honestly didn't expect a free plugin to be this competitive and was pleasantly surprised. I will be checking out BPB's Dirty Filter now.

Reminds me of the days when sga1566 and La Petite Excite was my gotto saturators. It have some similar characteristics of those 2 just mentioned but with much clearer sound and sharp digital fidelity. You can also create some crazy dynamics with the HP/LP filtering, it sounds to me like it starts self-oscillate or something.
Edit: oh wow I just read thats the same dev who made La Petite Excite made BPB Saturator.
Great stuff.

BPB Saturator is very nice sounding, and super easy to dial in. I don't personally have a lot of experience with analog hardware, but just from how it sounds, the tube is fantastic to my ears on loads of material. I like to dial it in creatively after some compression or even heavy limiting to give the sound some very nice crunch, it doesn't break up quickly at all. I'm also particularly in love with the high pass filter, there's something "magic" about how it operates, possibly linear phase because it doesn't cause huge spikes in peak level. Absolutely worth it for the price tag;).
