CHOW Tape is an analog tape machine physical model, originally based on the Sony TC-260. The current version can be used to emulate a wide variety of reel-to-reel tape machines. The physical modelling process is described in a technical paper presented at the 2019 DAFx conference. This work began part of a class project for Music 420 at Stanford University (CCRMA).

CHOW Tape is currently available in the following formats:

  • AUv3.
  • Standalone.

Wow! I have a new favorite tape sim/saturator, and it's free! I'm genuinely mind-blown.

Beside sounding amazing, the amount of presets it comes with is more than you could ask for. It also does anti-aliasing up to 16x, it has a linear phase mode, it offers loads of hysteresis modes, and yes you can tempo-sync wow/flutter.

I've tried many tape saturation plugins, both free and paid. I like using certain ones on different elements in the mix, but this is my go-to for mastering. It really adds weight to the whole mix and rounds off the harsh upper frequencies without making things muddy.

None of Chowdhury DSP plugins pass Logic validation in vers. 10.1, OS X 10.10.
