Hello. I've been rediscovering charlatan and is in fact amazing. too bad the development is halted. i really miss the possibility to modulates the filter with the lfo and the envelope at the same time. also miss a preset browser, showing the units of each knob ( miliseconds, dBs, hz), midi learn and some new filters...ahhh dreaming.
I' m not putting my beloved charlatan aside anytime soon, but which are the new charlatans of the vsti world right now ? which are your free favorite virtual analogs of the last 2 or 3 years ?

Not a "full-fledged" synth as you can't get at all the parameters, but Synthmaster Player is free until Nov. 1st and has 1,800 presets.

Im mainly interested in real free synths. Synthmaster player ( though is great - and the computer music magazine version even more interesting - is a stunt for people to buy the full version of synthmaster) i prefer synths without economic revenue in mind. open source stuff like like Surge is now.

Rather similar to Charlatan, around the same level or even better, using the subtractive synthesis, being 64-bit, and expressly freeware, I would say (alphabetically ordered):
And here are some other synths... which are not based on the subtractive synthesis but on other types of synthesis:
It is almost all my 64-bit freeware stuff. I use almost all of them, except those in italics (see below the little note about these in italics) and also except those which are emulations for which I have better in payware plugins (I don't use OB-Xd, Synth1, and Digits 2 for example, but OPX-Pro II, Discovery Pro, and VirtualCZ).
I also still use some old 32-bit instruments of that awesome level but which will unfortunately never be ported to 64-bit and I don't feel useful to mention them here, except Trans Computer Maschine and also the three instruments from AM Music Technology for example.
All the rest of my stuff is not freeware.
I could add that if you use Cakewalk by BandLab (and the PDF help file is here) and Asio4All, you have then an awesome full freeware setup, the DAW included !
EDIT: 21 October 2019 0:24 (French hour)
I just added a few other plugins which came back to my mind... and I also added (in italics style) some of the excellent suggestions made by the other contributors (and without forgetting to mention them to naturally thank them )
- Cheeze Machine 2
- Cobalt
- Dead Duck Free Instruments Bundle and all the Dead Duck Free Effects Bundle
- Deducktion
- Deputy Mark II
- FB-3100
- FB-3200
- FB-3300
- Helm (suggested by biscuitdough)
(note: Helm is freeware, not donationware. The donation is just suggested. You can leave the price field empty, the blue button just under the prices will though give you access to the download) - Kairatune
- Kern
- KXOMNI 600
- Kx-Polym-CSE
- Kx-Synth-X16
- Lord of the Springs
- MauSynth (suggested by crimsonwarlock)
- ModulAir
- Mono/Fury
- Nabla
- OB-Xd
- PG-8X
- Podolski
- Ragnarök
- SequencAir
- Stigma
- Surge
- Synth1
- TAL-NoiseMaker and all the free TAL effects (mid and bottom of the page)
- T-Force Alpha Plus (suggested by D-Fusion)
- The blooo
- The qyooo (suggested by biscuitdough)
- The scrooo
- Tyrell Nexus 6
- VCV Rack
- VeeSeeVSTRack
- Xhip and all the Xhip Effects
- XSRDO
And here are some other synths... which are not based on the subtractive synthesis but on other types of synthesis:
- Dexed
(true DX7 emulation)
(don't forget to take my Dexed Cart mentioned in the mid height of the original Dexed page) - Digits 2
(same phase distortion synthesis as in the Casio CZ-series) - Oxe
(FM synthesis) - Triple Cheese (Triple Cheese doesn't use any of the classic synthesis techniques – subtractive, FM or additive – but various forms of comb filter)
- VOPM
(FM synthesis) - Zebralette (subtractive, FM, additive, and wavetables)
It is almost all my 64-bit freeware stuff. I use almost all of them, except those in italics (see below the little note about these in italics) and also except those which are emulations for which I have better in payware plugins (I don't use OB-Xd, Synth1, and Digits 2 for example, but OPX-Pro II, Discovery Pro, and VirtualCZ).

I think MauSynth should be in that list as well as it is still one of the best sounding free VA synths around (get it with the alternative GUI though )BlackWinny wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2019 10:48 pm Rather similar to Charlatan, around the same level or even better, using the subtractive synthesis, being 64-bit, and expressly freeware
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, using Reaper and a fine selection of freeware plugins.

Hello Hans ! I've never heard of MauSynth... I'm going to try to find it and with the alternative GUI.crimsonwarlock wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 8:21 amI think MauSynth should be in that list as well as it is still one of the best sounding free VA synths around (get it with the alternative GUI though )BlackWinny wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2019 10:48 pm Rather similar to Charlatan, around the same level or even better, using the subtractive synthesis, being 64-bit, and expressly freeware

I just wanted to commend you on an awesome post. The time and effort that went into such a helpful post is impressive
There was another one by !Jason Synth, Ninja:
https://www.kvraudio.com/product/ninja_by_j_development
I thought that was a great sounding synth back in the day as well but I'm not sure it can be found for download these days. He also did Klangformer but I'm not sure that was ever released although I do seem to remember playing with a Beta. Jason kind of flaked out and disappeared. Shame as he was a very promising developer.

Ninja... He he, I have it. But it's been more than a decade that I didn't open it. It was 32-bit only but yes it was a good instrument.
As you told about it, I reopened it a minute ago. I looks very small now in our modern screens but its still sound very nice.
Would you like me to upload it on my webspace or (why not) in the banks/patches page of KVR?
In the banks/patches page I see that you had uploaded a selfmade bank. It seems that I can't download it anymore. Would you still have it ? And if yes, would you agree to send it to me so that I could upload it with the synth ?

Very, very old too... So it is 32-bit only of course (but it doesn't make a synth bad). And from the same developer as Ninja.layzer wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 2:41 am heres one that flew under my radar. not SE/SM. something new and free to
explore. im considering reskinning it myself... the current gui is a gradient mess(IMHO)

I didn't have Rebel. Just found it here.
I think that the OP wants to find "modern", currently available instruments. But it's good to unearth also these old very good gems.
In the same mind (awesome old 32-bit gems) there were also all those from AM Music Technology (three gems, I distribute them all in a unique zip in my uploaded collection), all those from AlgoMusic, all those from Angular Momentum (some of them are still available on Thomas' website), all those from Benoit Serrano, all those from Elektrostudio, all those from HGFortune, and SQ8L from Siegfried Kullmann, MinimogueVA and MinimogueLuxus from Gunar Ekornas and his friends, Firebird from Tone2, all those from Ugo Audio... and I forget some others...
I have them all, and some of them are uploaded on my webspace.
Ahhhh.... good old gems !
