AGM STRUMMING

I don't play guitar so I'm hoping someone can help/ explain something to me. When I'm in the strummer, I select a chord, say C, then I enter a pattern of upstrokes and downstrokes. The dots on the fretboard slightly change when strumming up vs. strumming down. Like one dot extra or less depending on if it's strumming up or down. I would think the dots on the fretboard shouldn't change regardless of how I'm strumming. I watched a video where someone did exactly what I'm describing and the fretboard dots didn't change. I'd really appreciate some help and guidance with this. Thank you very much.

I'm pretty sure strums of higher velocity play more strings of the chord, and lower-velocity strums play fewer strings.
