Mixanalog adds LA-2A

Mixanalog, the audio processing platform with remote-control and real-time audio streaming, has added LA-2A compressor to their selection of analog gear for mixing and mastering.

LA-2A is well known in the audio industry, but this specific unit has few interesting modifications which allow for easier use while still preserving the sonic signature of the LA-2A.

Mixanalog recreated the original Teletronix unit with vintage components, most importantly the original UTC input and output transformers and original vintage UREI T4B optical cells. To that they added the following upgrades:

  • The adjustment screw named R37 on original unit was changed to full control Emphasis knob which allows for easy adjustments of the sidechain filter.
  • Adding the Feedback knob gives users an option to modify tube amplifier.
  • An additional separate set of "fast" opto cells to contrast with the original UREI T4B "slow" mode.
  • Adjusted gain staging for modern productions.

They comment on their modifications:

The 1950s when the LA-2A started its life was a very different time from now. The original gain staging in the 50s was built for much lower gain than we have now. This means that with a vintage LA-2A in modern workflows you can be forced to choose between bad gain staging practices or extreme knob positions. This will result in undesired distortion or noise. With our change you can use a more flexible gain range with more control while still getting the softness and roundness of the LA-2A sound which we all love so much.

To use LA-2A login at mixanalog.com and reserve a session for your desired time slot. When your time starts, you will get full remote access to the LA-2A through a plugin-like web interface. Any changes are instantly applied and the processed audio is streamed back in lossless quality. When happy with the settings bounce the track and download the results.

LA-2A is free to use until 20th July, limited to 30 minutes per user per day. After that, the price will be 90 MAT which converts roughly to 3$, depending on the purchased amount.
