Wholegrain Presents California DynPEQ Plug-in Clinics in January 2018

Wholegrain Digital Systems

Wholegrain Digital Systems LLC has announced three California DynPEQ plug-in clinics in January 2018, all open to the public. The DynPEQ plugins are digital audio signal processors performing dynamic parametric equalization for the Mac platform.

The purpose of the clinics is to present both the architecture of the DynPEQ plugins and the means to exploit the architecture to perform many tasks asked of mixing and mastering engineers.

Admission to the clinic is free but is contingent on attendee registration through the Eventbrite website. Registered attendees will be entitled to a free 6-month NFR license of Quartet DynPEQ.

The first clinic will be held at Technicolor Sound Services at Paramount Studios, 5555 Melrose Ave., Hollywood, on Saturday 20 January 2018 at 3 PM.

The second clinic will be held at The Village Studios, 1616 Butler Ave., Los Angeles, on Tuesday 23 January 2018 at 7 PM.

The third clinic will be held at Fantasy Studios, 2600 Tenth St., Berkeley, on Monday 29 January 2018 at 7 PM.

The clinic doors will open a half-hour early for food, refreshments, and a DynPEQ demo system. Attendees are encouraged to bring brief tracks of sound on a thumb drive for auditioning with the demo system.

Three presenters from the professional audio community will participate in one or more of the clinics:

Alan Meyerson has over 40 years experience as an audio engineer and has developed industry-wide demand as a mixing engineer and a soundtrack mixer. He has worked with Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, James Newton Howard, John Powell, Henry Jackman, Mark Mothersbaugh, and many more composers for films large and small. His tenure in New York led to mixing for Bryan Ferry, Etta James, New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and countless other artists in the studio and live. He has won multiple awards and currently bases his studio at Remote Control Productions.

Nathaniel Kunkel is a music producer/mixer based in Los Angeles. His services through Studio Without Walls also include location recording, studio design, and product consultation. His production and engineering work has garnered multiple awards.

Wes Maebe (aka The Wesonator) has been a London-based freelance recording, mixing, mastering, and live engineer since 2003 for a vast and varied clientele. Clients have described the quality of his work as the bridge between old school edgy British engineering and lush American production values. His work has merited the citation Pro Sound Awards 2016 Studio Engineer of the Year. Wes is on the Grammy P&E Wing Advisory Board. He is a regular reviewer for Mix Magazine US, Pro Sound News and Audio Media International magazine. He has done presentations for the AES and also been a visiting lecturer at City of Westminster College, London.

DynPEQ Family Of Plugins

Bundled with the soundBlade mastering workstation since 2007, the DynPEQ family has been available for Pro Tools AAX/HDX since version 1.3. The DynPEQ plugins currently have two variants:

  • Trio DynPEQ is a three-band dynamic parametric equalizer configured as a single-channel insert for input processing.
  • Quartet DynPEQ is a four-band dynamic parametric equalizer with support for multi-channel stems and an analog peak limiter for mastering applications.

The heart of DynPEQ is a traditional parametric equalizer. Center/cutoff frequency and Q define the band to apply dynamics--there are no fixed bands or crossover frequencies. The principles used in finding parametric EQ bands intuitively extend for band dynamics.

DynPEQ avoids STFT granularity through traditional time-domain parametric EQ and dynamics. It calculates the total RMS level of the sidechain for a fast and smooth control signal--there is no need to extend release time.

The DynPEQ plugins are compatible with Pro Tools AAX/HDX from version 10 forwards. The plugins are also compatible with Audio Unit workstations. The supported host computer is an Intel Mac running Mac OS X version 10.6 forwards.
