Oberheim SEM V

The Oberheim SEM V accurately emulates the famous sound and interface of the original Synthesizer Expander Module introduced by Oberheim Electronics in 1974. Faithfully reproducing the tone, waveshapes, multi-mode 12dB/octave filter and other detailed characteristics, the Oberheim SEM V also brings the benefits of polyphony, MIDI control, arpeggiation and some innovative functionalities such as the 8-voice programmer, or the advanced keyboard follow.

Main features:

  • All the original parameters of the Oberheim SEM: two oscillators, each offering sawtooth wave and variable-width pulse wave with PWM, sine wave LFO, 12dB/oct multi-mode Filter with low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and notch, two ADS envelope generators.
  • Added functionalities: New LFO, Noise, Sub oscillator, on board effects (overdrive, chorus and delay), Arpeggiator, Portamento.
  • Polyphony up to 32 and 8 Voice Multitimbrality.
  • New 8 Voice Programmer module.
  • Advanced Keyboard Follow module.
  • Modulation Matrix module.
  • Works in Standalone.
  • Now compatible with iSEM Preset export/import.
  • Polyphony parameter to limit the polyphony of the plugin.
  • 20 new factory presets from Ian Boddy.
  • 21 new factory presets from Erik Norlander.
  • 35 new factory presets from Richard Courtel.
  • 11 new factory presets from Kevin Lamb.
  • 14 new factory presets from Drew Newmann.
  • "Forward Retrigg" mode for the 8-Voice Programmer (for easy use of sequences using the Arpeggiator).
  • "Reassign" mode for the 8-Voice Programmer (like in the original one, the SEM V will first use the boards that are not gated in its voice assignment).
  • Sustain pedal is now active on all systems.

I have Analog Lab and this Oberheim SEM V. is among my favorites. Very Oberheim SEM V sounding. What a wonderful analog sound the Oberheim has. Possibly want this one for production. Exceptional quality sounding synth. I will definitely probably need this one for a webpage design. Anybody would.

From what I can remember, Analog Lab is mostly stable within, Ableton Live 64-bit. Windows 7 PRO 64-bit.

I love this synth. I'm a big fan of the Oberheim sound and feel, and this is an excellent rendition of it.

The sound is very lush, and very "analog" - you can get very deep, thick sounds, or reedy thin sounds. The onboard effects, while not part of the actual SEM product, are very useful and appropriate.

Most things about this device are about as perfect as one could imagine them being; it's very easy to use, very easy to control, very easy to play with.

The modulation matrix and voice programmer are very useful and extraordinarily powerful, probably easier to use in the SEM than any other Arturia synth. I would have hoped that the number of outputs would have matched the inputs (which would have enabled sample and hold, for example) but no luck; this is a very small criticism, in the end.

There are bigger-sounding, possibly more faithful SEM emulators out there - Sonic Projects' OP-X, for example - but the Arturia SEM-V is easier to use in my opinion, and well worth the investment.
