EastWest/Quantum Leap Gypsy features a collection of extremely detailed Gypsy style virtual instruments capable of playing completely realistic performances. Gypsy is essential for film, TV and game composers.

The nylon string guitar, violin and trombone can play in both Gypsy and Classical styles. In the classical realm these three instruments are unparalleled in the sampling world in terms of playability, diversity and sound quality.

The new king of sampled violins has arrived. The violin and trombone feature many articulations, repetitions and even true legato intervals. All of the guitars were sampled with up and down strokes, many velocities and picking styles, release trails, chords and effects. Gypsy's guitars sound incredible and were played by one of the best session guitarists in Los Angeles, David Kole.

The accordions feature many different setups, all with air flow in and out samples, as well as expressive samples, chords, and left hand bass.

Gypsy also has a very cool Gypsy percussion program and two flamenco dancers (foot stomps, as well as traditional castanets).

Gypsy also features an incredible bandoneon and cimbalom, two very rare instruments.

With the combination of Gypsy, Ra and Silk collections you have the most detailed and expressive ethnic instruments ever produced.

A bit outdated, I think it was released in 2007. This is noticeable in several ways, but especially around nuance. What was top of the line almost 20 years ago feels old-fashioned today, especially when it comes to the nuances of music. A lot has happened since 2007 and it's noticeable that time hasn't stood still when using functions from newer libraries...

The quality between different sounds is also somewhat uneven, especially when it comes to dynamics. The three accordions are good - dynamics and nuances play less of a role there. For cimbalom and guitars, the age is somewhat noticeable, OK but not much more. Very good function in a mix, but hardly a solo instrument. Same goes for the violin.

On the positive side, the Opus engine is unusually low on CPU and GPU resource on a modern computer, so many of the sounds in Gypsy can be great starting points for experimentation.

Quite affordable as "bread and butter for European traditional music" on a sale price but hardly at full price. I think East-West would benefit from either making fairly radical updates to its older libraries or ensuring that prices are always lower to attract customers to its more modern libraries. East-West has the option to do a trial subscription for all products where you can fill a larger hard drive. Then you can pick the icing on the cake for the libraries you really need. That's good.
