Komplete Start has a bug of everything. Computer music as well has a well rounded selection.

If there were 64 bit oatmeal, that would be a winner.

BTW, is surge better than synth1? it looks a bit more updated maybe?

Lately Ive been doing plenty of acoustic emulation on zebra as some of you know, and synth1 goes very very near, even without being a modulation monster I can get pretty similar stuff. So for me synth1 is still king of flexibility(of all 64 bit free stuff).
Oatmeal would be for me if it were 64 bit.

I Know Crystal or Zynaddsubfx can be even more complete than synth1, but their UI is too complicated, even for seasoned sound designers. I started doing a bank for Crystal, which showed me how flexible it is, but the UI is a bit cumbersome.

IF I knew a bit about how to make skins, I would design a new one for crystal but I dont know if its skinnable. Would be cool to have something like lumina on oatmeal, which is a workflow enhancer for that synth.

Cheers.

Surge has a larger architecture than Synth1 so yes it beats it in versatility. Surge is stronger in the more digital sound domain as Synth1 doesn't have the tools to do much in that space. However, the learning curve is steeper so if you feel a bit lost in Synth1 going to Surge is probably an unwise idea if you end up even more lost.

The "most versatile" is not the same as "the best", which is very subjective.

At this point in time Surge is the most versatile free POLYPHONIC synth. Fathom Synth (free Mono version) is a contender in the MONO (1 voice, stereo) domain. Fathom has even more features then Surge, but...no Polyphony).

About Surge...

Very versatile oscillator section (with modulation, shaping, wavetables). Subtractive, AM, FM, FX, serial and parallel signal paths with feedback options and (much) more. Very versatile modulation matrix. Almost anything can be modulated by any (combination of) modulation sources (including modulating modulators).

With flexibilty comes complexity. But if you stay away from the modulation matrix and FM matrix and just use the oscillators, the various filters and the amp and filter envelopes it's really not complicated at all. No more complicated then Synth1 (which is deceivingly versatile in its own right).

As said, Fathom Synth has a (semi?) modular approach, which makes it even more versatile. No use to sum up all it's features. But as said, the free version is MONO (1 voice, stereo, not Polyphonic).

additive synthesis, ring modulation, waveshaping, multi-segment envelope generator)
[*]TAL-NoiseMaker (subtractive synthesis, FM synthesis, phase distortion synthesis, ring modulation)[/list]

All these multi-synthesis synths are free! And some of them have even an embedded arpeggiator...
Tal noisemaker does not do phase distortion
Oops !
Phase modulation, of course. It was a typo. Corrected. Thanks !

Definitely Surge. I wouldn't even bother to look at ZynAddSubFx, it's absolutely horrible to use, and it's buggy.

I see i even recommended ZynAdd, back in the days... :D

I could never get into it. Although I love synths with deep possibilities, it must have a somewhat developed UI that makes it workable for me. Oatmeal is a prime example: it's completely unusable for me in it's default state, but put the Lumina skin on it and it becomes a beautiful instrument. If someone would/could refactor the UI of Zyn it would be insanely popular I think, as it does sound very good.

Oatmeal looks worse imo. Too tiny aswell. But the lumina skin is nice.
