Welcome to the KVR Developer Challenge 2023, the ninth free-for-all audio plugin / audio application / soundware design event.

The "KVR Developer Challenge" is for anyone who develops Audio Plugins or Applications and Soundware. The challenge is to create and release a brand new free audio plugin, application or sound library / pack / set that will benefit the community at large.

Creativity is key, it can be as simple or as complex as you want - KVR members will vote on the entries and pick the eventual winner using whatever criteria they choose to.

Five cash prizes will be awarded to the top entries and a wildcard pick. Prize moneys are sponsored by the community-funded KVR Developer Challenge 2023 donation pool.

The KVR Developer Challenge began in 2006 and has occurred every 2-3 years ever since.

2021 gave us WhispAir by Full Bucket Music, GR-8 by Phuturetone, Virtuosity Drums by Versilian Studios, and FKFX Influx by FKFX. 2018 delivered gems such as ProF.E.T. by Ignite Amps, Deducktion by Dead Duck Software and MPS by Full Bucket Music. We had Youlean Loudness Meter, Lagrange by Ursa DSP and Spaceship Delay from Musical Entropy in 2016, Multiply by Acon Digital, Nova-67P by vladg/sound and Emissary by Ignite Amps in 2014, and so it goes on...

MONSTER OctaChord Installation

Monster OctaChord is a free plugin available in Windows VST2/VST3 64-bit and Mac VST2/VST3/Audio Unit 64-bit formats.

There's no installer so you have to put the file manually. Read and follow these steps:

  1. Download the "MONSTER OctaChord v1.zip" according to your computer's OS (Mac or Windows).
  2. UnZip the "MONSTER OctaChord v1.zip".
  3. If you use Windows and Cubase, Studio One, Ableton Live, Reaper, FL Studio, Reason, etc, put the .dll file to the VST2 folder OR the .vst3 file to the VST3 folder of your DAW (If you don't know the location, googling "VST folder location windows").
  4. If you use Mac and Cubase, Studio One, Ableton Live, Reaper, FL Studio, Reason, etc, put the .vst file to the VST2 folder OR the .vst3 file to the VST3 folder of your DAW (If you don't know the location, googling "VST folder location mac"). If you use GarageBand or Logic Pro, put the .component file to the Audio Unit folder of your DAW (If you don't know the location, googling "audio unit folder location mac").
  5. Copy the folder "MONSTER OctaChord v1 Library" to your external hard disk or any hard disk.
  6. Fire up your DAW and load the MONSTER OctaChord plugin and it will ask the location of the sound library. Choose the "MONSTER OctaChord v1 Library" which you have copied on step 5.
  7. ENJOY the plugin.

NOTES: For Mac user, MONSTER OctaChord v1 plugin is not signed yet so if you encounter problem that the plugin is detected as harmful (actually it's not), you can try to googling on "how to install unsigned software on Mac OS X".

Northern Trumpets

Northern Trumpets is a jazz trumpet sound library for the Kontakt sampler platform (full version).

I created this instrument drawing inspiration from the mesmerizing trumpet sounds of renowned Norwegian musicians Nils Petter Molvaer and Arve Henriksen.

I didn't replicate their sound; instead, I aimed to capture the ambiance by blending warmth and coolness, mastery and spontaneity, and the tension of the notes with a relaxed perception.

The attack, the initial sound of each note, plays a vital role in this instrument. It may seem unpredictable, much like a trumpet player-musician just starting their career. Yet, it also serves as a powerful expressive technique in the hands of a seasoned musician, who can convey a wealth of emotions with just a few notes.

One of the secrets to effectively using Northern Trumpets is that the precision of the attack depends on the velocity with which you strike the key on your MIDI keyboard. The attack becomes more unpredictable when playing soft notes at a slow tempo.

A little backstory: I was born in Russia, where winter stretches for half a year. I've been beyond the Arctic Circle, where temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius are the norm, and I vividly remember how the trumpet mouthpiece would freeze to my lips. And while I began working on this project in sunny Bulgaria and completed it in the scorching heat of Barcelona, I felt a profound connection to the North and its perpetual frost.

I invite you to play a few sustained notes and experience the mood of the Northern Trumpets. I hope you find it as inspiring as I do.

Turbo Paco

Turbo Paco is an old-style Algorithmic Reverb, based on some own and other classic algorithms reverse engineered and posted by the user "Acreil" on this forum thread.

This Effect is mostly about Allpass loop and Feedforward-Comb reverbs, with some few exceptions. There are some Choruses as a bonus.

The controls are pretty much self-explanatory except "Dyn Time" and "Op Range". When "Dyn Time" is positive the dynamics processor does ducking. When it's negative it does inverse ducking, which results in a kind of gate. "Op Range" is the level at which the hard clipper will clip the input signal. This is necessary for controlling the dynamic range of the fixed-point implementation.

The design philosophy is to have a limited set of controls and many algorithms. Now there aren't a lot, but more can be added.

The algorithms are implemented on:

  • 16-bit fixed point delay lines with noise shaping with a 32-bit accumulator for computation.
  • 16-bit custom-format floating point encoding delay lines with single precision floating point computation.
  • Single precision floating point (32-bit).

The rate of the the sample rate converter can be changed between to some preset frequencies, some "overclocked" and others "underclocked". Corollary of that, this effect runs at fixed sample rate, so it sounds the *same on all project sample rates.

The reverb is block processed and some algorithms use low sample rates, hence some of the algorithms are very CPU friendly.

My own algorithms are rookie stuff. Doing reverb is complex. I tried my best for them to sound acceptable. On the algorithm dropdown the algorithms prefixed with "AC" come from the user "Acreil" on gearspace. Those with no prefix are mine.

It's not an effect, it's not a synthesizer, it's not a sampler, it's not a 3D panner, it's not a controller... but it is all of this: it is the SpatStrument SM24;-).

Spatialization of sound with "3D panner" type tools is now a common and easy thing, and the popularization of spatial audio with Dolby Atmos and ambisonic technique makes it almost fashionable.
But considering a loudspeaker space as a concrete dimension of sound which can be modeled in a global way still remains the task of kind of "hackers", most often requiring specialized and somewhat complex environments.

Thanks to the recent expansion of MPE gesture controllers (my first one was the LinnStrument...), this SpatStrument should make it possible to approach audio-spatial sculpting in a playful and creative way, whether it is done inside standardized broadcast formats or in the freedom of original creations.

This plugin may interest firstly people who play electronic and electroacoustic live music, but also those who compose in multichannel studios to create fixed media works for domes, cinema, acousmoniums or whatever they like, with ambisonics or even binaural with the appropriate convertors.

Fortunately, it can also work in stereo with an ordinary keyboard with still enough features to play with sounds in innovative ways;-).


Characteristics:

  • Up to 24 output channels with totally free speakers arrangement in 2D or 3D space.
  • Periphonic Spatial Mode to simplify the use with surround / immersive common formats (domes, Atmos-like 7.1.4, 9.1.6, 11.1.8, NHK 22.2...).
  • Volumetric Spatial Mode for advanced spatial creation and true 3D speakers arrangements.
  • 8 MPE polyphony voices with direct 3D spatialization with each finger.
  • Shape based spatial synthesis (Rings, Lines, Cube, Chaos) that can be combined and animated with different modulators and synchronized with sampling and synthesis parameters.
  • No including ambisonics and binaural processing: just use the converters you prefer (IEM and SPARTA are free and among the bests, special configuration files are provided for them).
  • Can also work in stereo;-).
  • Input Live processing: play a hardware or software instrument through it to add spatialization and effects, together with additional filter and envelope; spatialize a track content with a MPE controller; use the audio input level to modulate sound and space parameters (Envelope Follower).
  • Ring Modulation between the Live Input and the Sampler or the Synthesis.
  • Sampler: sample the audio Input or load an audio file; play it through a multimode filter, with its ADSR and LFO; control the Start and Loop points of the 8 polyphony voices independently with the fingers.
  • Synthesizer: 3 oscillators subtractive principle with FM, Synchro, multimode Filter and wide range ADSR and LFO modulations (it may not be well suited to play scaled melodies...).
  • Global MPE Modulations: use the X, Y, Z fingers positions, their distance and angle from the center to modulate every sampler and synthesizer parameters polyphonically.
  • Cross Modulation between the sampling and the synthesis sections.
  • Octo FX: 8 channels Delay/Resonator and Hall Reverberation (Freeverb in Mac version).
  • Alternative Triggers: ClockTrigger and VeloPad, for granular like effects (experimental...); they can also send MIDI Notes to other devices if the host allows it.
  • All parameters in one screen: What You See Is What You Generate.

Requirements:

- Screen size 1080p minimum
- Windows all versions
- MacOS minimum 10.15, Intel or Rosetta.
- A VST3 host that can use multichannel plugins.
The ideal is to have multichannel busses (Reaper, Ardour, Pyramix...) or to allow to connect freely inputs and outputs (Bidule, Element, Max/Msp, Usine Hollyhock, VSTHost...), but some stereo only DAWs can nevertheless distribute a multichannel output on several stereo busses (Live, FLStudio, Studio One, Waveform ...).
Note that it will not currently work with Steinberg's products.
- Optional but highly desirable: a MPE controller with enough physical space, sensitivity and accuracy for up to eight XYZ fingers movements (Sensel Morph is ideal...).

The SpatStrument is made with the 1.5 beta version of SynthEdit, and uses also the beta version of Elena Design's sampling framework, without whom this plugin could not exist.
Also with the modules from Davidson Audio & Multimedia, RoyTech, Sacha, Rob Herder, Time Domain.

Known issues:
- some graphic elements can flicker with some computers and graphic cards
- although not designed for real-time loop point modulations, the sampling framework performs generally well... however clicks may appear
- Mac: in MPE Mode Notes and Pitch parameters are currently merged; Import/Export of Spatial Configuration Files doesn't work; Area Shape cannot be changed; in some cases the UI can be unresponsive when loading a Preset with a Sample in Reaper; MPE efficiency modes is not available

Euclidean, Non Linear, Poly-metric, Polyrhythmic, Morph-able Step Sequencer

Roundels is uniquely based on summing the output of multiple Euclidean rhythm generators to produce new, hybrid rhythmic structures that feature both internal, small scale variation in addition to larger scale repetition. This, in combination with the natural variation provided by using the resultant poly-rhythms to drive a (non-fixed length) step sequencer, that can treat a sequence of notes as a Schoenbergian 'pitch row' or Fortean 'set', creates the possibility for effortless experimentation without resorting to stochastic intervention, thus giving the user ultimate choice in the direction of their music, and therefore ultimate control. The output of each of the Euclidean rhythm generators can be targeted to affect just the movement of the step sequencer (with no rhythmic trigger), to produce just a rhythmic trigger with no effect on changing the step sequencer's position, or to affect both.

The step sequence of pitches can also be manipulated under transformational functions such as transposition, retrograde progression, intervallic inversion, diminution, and expansion, in addition to the standard re-ordering available in most sequencers of this type - backwards, forwards and ping-pong playback. It also includes variation of the step-size.

Roundels frees your sequences from being tied to the conventional timeline of a DAW's sequencer. It can operate over any length of pulses and, using the external trigger function, can act in any time-world as it responds to MIDI note-on messages rather than clock pulses.

Roundels also features a unique sequence-morph function that brings together three discrete (user-generated) sequencer patches as one entity. This can be used manually, it can be auto- animated, or it can be controlled via your DAW's automation.

Roundels now gives the user the ability to form a komplex of inter-related rhythmic subsets ensuring there can be a level of hierachy and organisation imposed when using the Euclidean sequencer.

Roundels is designed to function as a MIDIFX plugin in Logic.

  • Adjustable range (2 – 96 x 16ths, 128, 192, 256 and 384 x 16ths).

Hard looping:

  • Entire sequence can be reset after a selectable length of pulses (1 - 96 x 16ths).

Sequence Morph:

  • Three independent sequence patches can be morphed together over time as smoothly as possible.
  • Morph can be manual, auto-animated, or controlled via automation.

Parameter Randomisation:

  • Individual sequences can be generated randomly.
  • Option to auto-generate a set of three random yet closely related roundels as a starting point.

  • Selectable targeting to randomise just the pitch content, the rhythmic elements, the sequencer settings, or all at once.

Single Sequence Usage:

  • All functions available to Automation.
  • Saving of presets via host application.
  • Sequencer is locked to host tempo 16ths BUT can be triggered by any stream of incoming MIDI Note Ons.
  • Using any tuplet pulse will result in poly-metric playback against that of the DAW in External mode.
  • Calculation of Lowest Common Multiple (in 16ths) for aggregated Euclidean rhythms.
  • Calculation of Lowest Common Multiple (in 16ths) for aggregated Euclidean rhythms and pitch sequence.

VeeSTeeEx is a Windows only wrapper for VST2 plugins, which adds a preset management system to the wrapped plugin.

It uses a SQLite database to store all imported presets, which then can very quickly be selected for usage within the wrapped plugin.

There is tagging by some built-in tag groups and tags, but is is also possible to define own tag groups and tags. And there is also the possibility to rate presets and to quickly find presets by name with a simple search. This tagging/rating/searching can be used in combination to do enhanced filtering.

The preset files ('.VeeSTeeExPresets') can be shared.

By default there will be an area above the wrapped plugin, which gives access to the presets and also allows to step thru them.

How this top area looks like can be changed by editing the xml 'GUI' file of the wrapper for each wrapped plugin individually.

Those GUI files could be shared too.

Version 1.2.0.854 - 2023-12-17:

  • Required for Synth1 VeeSTeeExPresets!
    But can - and should - be used to wrap all plugins.
    New option 'Use preset color' to display presets with the color of the 'Color' tag assigned to them.
    This feature is enabled by new built-in tag group 'Color' and some pre-defined 'Color' tags.
    Of course, this new feature can be used for all wrapped synths.
  • Speeded up some database operations which turned out to be too slow to work properly for a database with 18.000+ presets.
    For sure also other wrapped synths with a large preset collection will benefit from this improvement.
  • Now tag groups and tags can have a comment.
    Check option 'Show info tips' and hover over tag groups and tags to see a possible comment in the info tip.

The name EQoder is a wordplay between EQ and Vocoder, since you have to use it like a vocoder but the effect is a modulated cascaded Equalizer. In its resulting function it is an amplifying comb-filter.

The fundamental frequency of each unit/voice is controlled by MIDI notes. Thus, in order to use the effect, you need a MIDI input (or the internal keyboard).

The internal harmonic structure of the comb filter can be adjusted with several parameters.

In order to work with EQoder you route it as an insert filter after an arbitrary audio source (e.g. a synthesizer). Since DAWs are very different in routing insert effects with MIDI please refer to the manual of your DAW.

You can use EQoder as a sound design tool or a melodic extension in your composition. Think of EQoder as a tool to play a second melody on the harmonic structure of your original sound, or as a further modulation source for each note of your favorite sound.

AFEQ is an EQ using and demonstrating the use of the AudioFilter library. The plugin is made with JUCE.

HyperStonik is a ROMpler with some delirious FX. (very strange effect ...). He succeeds his elder SloTone (KVRDC18).

We can use it with 2 modes: Instrument or Loop mode. No need to MIDIfiles. Some OSCillator generate the beats. (You can compile some new instrument with a separate software not delivery in the preset package). You just need a .wav file (a loop) and with some appropriate setting, you can attach text file with it (in the same repertory) and save the slice config (file text with the same name of the sound).

A soundware is incorporate in the project.

Noizier - A Simple Noise Generator

Noizier is an Audio Plugin created to generate noise sounds quick and easily with a selected range of modulators to shape the sound.

How to use:

  • Play MIDI notes to generate the sound.
  • Noise type: Can be changed by using the dropdown menu.
  • Currently there are 3 Noise types:
    • White Noise.
    • Pink Noise.
    • Comb-ish Noise (Sounds a bit like applying a comb filter, hence the name).
  • ADSR Panel: Change the envelope of the Notes.
  • LFO Button: Turn on LFO Amplitude Modulation and change the Frequency with the dial.
  • HPF and LPF dials: Can be used to apply a highpass and lowpass filter (fixed 36db per octave slope each).
  • Keytrack button: Enables a fake pitch mode. Here, a lowpass filter is applied to the signal depending on the note you are playing. Ranges from C0 to C7.

How to install

  • Windows: Use the installer or copy Noizier.vst3 to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3.
  • Linux: Copy Noizier.lv2 folder to your LV2 Plugins Folder.

Appressor

Appressor (Uppressor) is an Audio VST-3 Plugin that enhances the clarity of an audio signal. It works better with a moderate input signal (less than -4 dBFS). A simplistic GUI follows my function-over-form approach.

Subsim

Subsim is a web-based subwoofer array simulator. It is a simple visualisation tool showing an approximation of how sound at a given frequency coming from multiple sources will propagate through space and what interferences will arise. It is meant to help engineers learn about basic principles of subwoofer array design, while giving them a free hand to try out their own ideas and inventions.

There is a couple of predefined projects you can go through to see both some of the aforementioned basic principles and some of the features of the tool. Here are some highlights:

  • Web-based, no download or installation required. Mobile friendly.
  • Highly optimised engine allows for near-instantaneous rendering. No more setting a target frequency, pressing a button and going to get a coffee.
  • (Almost) fully parametric - all numeric parameters can use mathematical expressions and these expressions can contain user-defined variables.
  • Visualisation of arrival times from different sources at a given point in space.
  • Rudimentary support for first reflections.
  • Adjustable dynamic range and step. Get a beautiful (but not as useful) gradient-like image, or a slightly less beautiful (but much more useful) isobaric prediction of areas with similar SPL.
  • Export to JPG and PNG (with or without UI elements).
  • Save projects in the browser, or export them to a simple text file you can share with others.
  • Free and open source.

Show/Hide Rules

Any operating system, any plugin format, a stand-alone application, a sound library - anything that will assist in music making goes! You have three months to get it together - submissions will end on June 30th, 2023. They will all then be hosted for download on the KVR server and released "AT ONCE" for public appraisal and voting!

Although anything goes, you should consider how to appeal to the largest market - things such as open source or being multi-platform may garner a bigger audience, and consequently more votes. This is your call though. Whatever you are comfortable with!

The Basics:

  • Anyone may enter.
  • Your entry must be an original creation made by you (your team / crew / company / family). Of course you may reuse code / modules / development frameworks, but the actual plugin / application / sound library should be a new, original creation, not just an obviously cut-down subset of a program you have already written.
  • Your entry must not break any copyright rules or license agreements - if your entry uses GPL code then your code should adhere to any restrictions imposed by this, for example.
  • Your entry must not be restricted in any way that could make it appear to be a demo / trial version for a subsequent "full" release. i.e. It must not be save-disabled or beep every few seconds or nag the user to donate / pay, etc. Your entry should be fully functioning and remain fully functioning forever.
  • Your entry may support any operating system(s) in general use for making music: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS or Android.
  • Your entry may support any plugin format, or be a stand alone application / utility, or be a sound / sample library.
  • You may use any programming language or development environment (e.g. programming languages such as C++, Delphi, Java, etc. or any of the myriad development applications such as SynthEdit, Flowstone, Max, etc.).
  • Design and testing must be done in private - public beta testing is not allowed as this may affect the voting process.
  • During the voting period you may update your entry but updates must be bug fixes ONLY. You are NOT allowed to add new features or rework existing ones during the voting period.
  • You grant KVRaudio.com the permission to distribute your entry for download via our server from July 3rd, 2023, onwards.
  • You grant KVRaudio.com the permission to act on your behalf, without monetary involvement, for your entry to be published and/or publicized in/on written publications with or without accompanied media such as CDs and DVDs, as well as online publications. You may choose to opt out via a written (email) disapproval of such permission at the time of your entry. KVRaudio.com will not seek or make attempts at financial gain by promoting your entries on written or online publications.

How To Enter:

  • To enter you will need a KVR Developer Account [get one here - it's free]. If you already manage your products and submit news directly at KVR, you will already have one.
  • Access the Developer Control area and add your entry as a new product but remember to also set the KVRDC23 flag. Anything flagged as KVRDC23 will NOT be made live on KVR until the KVRDC23 go live date of July 3rd, 2023.

Voting:

  • KVR Members will vote for their favourite entries between July 3rd-31st, 2023. Depending on the amount of submissions, the voting period (and consequently the winner announcement date) may be extended for another week or so. All KVR members will be eligible to vote although we may instigate some restrictions at the time of voting - maximum joined date, minimum number of posts, etc. - to help prevent voter fraud.
  • Voting will be in the form of selecting a top 5:
    • 1st choice will be awarded 5 points.
    • 2nd choice will be awarded 4 points.
    • 3rd choice will be awarded 3 points.
    • 4th choice will be awarded 2 points.
    • 5th choice will be awarded 1 point.
  • The winners will be announced on August 3rd, 2023.
  • The prize fund will be delivered to the winners (or charity or recipient of the winners' choices) via PayPal within a week of the winner being announced.

The Prize Fund (Money Money Money)

  • The prize will be cold, hard, cash, made up from donations from the KVR community. Donations can be made via PayPal and will be held in escrow by KVR Audio until the winner has been selected. The prize will be paid to the eventual winner via PayPal. We'll endeavor to keep the prize fund total updated here.
  • The prize fund will be split:
    • 30% to the Windows Plugin or Standalone Application entry with the most votes 1, 2
    • 30% to the macOS Plugin or Standalone Application entry with the most votes 1, 2
    • 20% to the next highest placed entry
    • 10% to the highest placed Soundware entry
    • 10% to a wild card random selection

2 Yes we know Linux (and other OS) appears to be overlooked but the Linux (and other OS) userbase at KVR is very small so we'll concentrate prize distribution on the two major Operating Systems for audio production - Windows and Mac OS X.
