It would be nice to have a decent emu of the Jupiter 6 for 80's sounds, EFM Jup6 is OK but it always sounds as if the notes are always gliding up a semitone

As for sounds of the 80's - Pet Shop Boys were up there for me, big drums, massive pads, great production and above all brilliant songs.

the 80's, for me, was al about 'ZTT', 'factory records', '4AD', and.....iron maiden

i didn't even realise that i was under the spell of horn, dudley etc until much later on (being handed copied albums on cassette tapes doesn't lend itself to knowing about record labels or production teams). i just happened to really love bands like 'propaganda', 'art of noise', and 'frankie goes to hollywood'

this 'production masterclass' from trevor horn opens with pad chords, thematically similar to stuff that can be found woven into various tracks of the artists i listed above. i was unaware i was falling for the 'brand'



at the same time, i really got into 'new order' via their 12" remixes - 'blue monday', 'shellshock' etc. got really heavily into them, but then traced them back to 'joy division', and that changed everything. i find it hard to listen to new order these days, as so much of the stuff sounds dated (unlike the ztt stuff, that i can still enjoy). i do still like the early new order stuff. ('movement', 'peel sessions' etc). 'procession' is still one of my fav songs of all time



later on that decade, i would end up getting into certain artists on the 4AD label. 'gigantic' introduced me to 'the pixies', and i still love 'hunkpapa', and the debut album from 'throwing muses'



i still dig a lot of 80's production. synths were used to great effect, in creative ways, by really talented keyboard players. 'the thompson twins', 'duran duran' and 'go west' stand out for me, in this regard. this is a great gig to watch, not only for how well their highly produced sound translates live (and peter doesn't drop a note), but to watch the fantastic alan murphy (guitarist)



having said all of that, NOTHING takes me back to the 80's like madonna. i guess that's what happens when a horny 13-year old gets exposed to madonna (not literally, of course). only have to hear the opening bars of 'get into the groove', or 'dress you up', and i get butterflies in the stomach, and a little clammy

I was surprised to read that because I would never have assumed a Jupiter behind it, frankly.

Wouln't call it an emu. It was inspired by Jupiter maybe but has tons of more features.
